Guardian Angel, Service Dog

nanda
Before I met Nicole and Angel I had seen people with service animals BUT I had no idea how much they could change someones life. Nicole and I met at Art Awakenings a program that promotes empowerment and recovery through the power of creative expression with adults and youth who face behavioral health challenges. I love painting with Nicole and cracking jokes! Nicole is a very amazing, sweet and strong person she is also the owner of a very amazing service animal named Angel. Angel is a very fitting name for this sweet dog! Not only does she support Nicole at the studio she supports everyone! She is very obedient and lays right next to Nicole at the studio, with Nicoles permission she will go give hugs and kisses.
angelb
Angel is very smart and aware of not only Nicole’s needs for support but others in the studio. There are some days I come in feeling a little down and Angel will sit next to Nicole and wait for permission to come give me hugs. She always cheers me up!
Before Angel, Nicole told me she would isolate for days sometimes weeks at a time. She would stop taking her medication and would be hospitalized repeatedly. Angel makes sure Nicole takes her meds everyday. Nicole says that Angels unconditional love for her does what all the the doctors and medications in the world could NEVER do!
Nicole shared the following information with me, hoping to help others learn how to get their dogs trained as service animals too.

Nicole told me that there is really no time frame to get your service animal certified through the Americans with Disabilities Act. The service animal has to be specifically trained to do something that aids their owner with their disability. Service animals must have basic obedience training, and training on how to act in public places.

Power Paws http://www.azpowerpaws.org/, ADA, and AZ Assistive Dog Association helped Nicole with guidlines on how to get Angel trained. Legally the owner must have full control of the animal at all times. Trained service animals can go anywhere their owner goes such as public transportation, restaurants, theaters etc. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans_with_Disabilities_Act_of_1990 businesses must make reasonable accommodations to assist individuals with disabilities.
Unfortunately there are people who abuse these rights, they claim their pets as service animals to get into public places and to get their pets on an airplane for free.

I watched this 20/20 report a few weeks ago on a Friday evening and it really upset me.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/pet-owners-game-emotional-support-animal-system-fly/story?id=30064532  I worry that if people continue to do this will the people who actually have true certification and licensing such as Nicole be permitted to bring Angel on an airplane? Not too long ago there was a man at Sky Harbor airport that brought his pit bull (not registered as a service animal) to the airport to board with him. They were waiting to board and the dog snapped and bit a man with no provocation. People who take advantage of the rights of the disabled, make it hard for people with service animals. They are the ones getting attention from the media, not Angel and others animals who are saving lives. Nicole hopes that in the future there will be some sort of central registry or other guidlines in place to ensure that these animals are properly trained before working in public. Until then is its up to dogs like Angel and the people they support to be a positive example and educate the public.

Essential Highlights: The Citrus Kit

Essential Highlights-Citrus
Citrus oils are energizing, uplifting and invigorating. They can be a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. They can help with depression and winter time blues. I strongly encourage you to diffuse these “sunny” essential oils if you are experiencing cabin fever.
WILD ORANGE is a cheerful oil and very useful for mood elevation and generally well received by children. It can help relieve stress and is often used quite successfully to help children sleep. It can also help with constipation (apply to the navel). Wild Orange is also delicious added to smoothies, chocolate and pancake batter.
LEMON is a very fresh oil. It’s a great oil to diffuse in your kitchen because it’s great for eliminating odors. Do you want to get rid of cigarette smoke odor? Try lemon oil. Its anti-bacterial properties make it perfect for cleaning surfaces. Simply add lemon oil to a water filled glass bottle. It’s great for removing gum from your child’s hair or used as a natural gunk remover. One of my favorite uses is a quick swipe down the side of my nose to stop it from running.
GRAPEFRUIT is a bright oil that can help awaken your senses. It’s a great oil to add to your washcloth and leave on the shower floor, allow the heat of the shower to create an aromatic start for your day. I really think you’ll love the energy. Because of it’s high vitamin C content it’s great for immune support which is another reason to diffuse it when everyone is stuck indoors during the winter. It is also quite helpful with mental exhaustion.
LIME has an intoxicating citrus scent, I just love it. It is very uplifting when diffused and an oil you definitely will use in the kitchen. Use it in all of your lime inspired recipes and add it to your club soda. It’s also beneficial to help with colds, coughs, asthma and can boost the immune system. If you don’t have a diffuser add a drop into the palms of your hands with a carrier oil and inhale.
The CITRUS KIT is on sale during the month of February and when using COUPON CODE: jeanne you will double your savings to get 20% off
If you have any questions about the kit or citrus oils, please ask!
(Citrus Oils may be photosensitive, avoid sunlight after use)

Ginger

Ginger (large)(blog)
Ginger oil is warm and soothing and I think best know for it’s ability to squash morning sickness, nausea, and motion sickness. To use it as a digestive aid you can take it internally, apply it topically or diffuse it. Because of it’s antiseptic and carminative properties (a preperation intended to either prevent formation of gas or expel it) it’s wonderful for treating food poisoning and intestinal infections. I highly recommend diffusing ginger when dealing with chronic or severe nausea.
Ginger is one of my favorite oils and i use it daily for it’s anti-inflammatory properties.  I was having inflammatory pain in one of my knees and was using one drop each of lemongrass and ginger oil topically on my knee. I was definitely feeling improvement in my pain but I was looking for no pain. I knew that I needed to fight the inflammation from the inside out. It was then that I began to add one drop each of lemongrass and ginger in a quart of water daily, and in 3 days I was nearly pain free. I would make 2 suggestions if you are interested in this protocol. If you have pain that is moderate to severe you may need more ginger and lemongrass. Also, if you don’t want to drink the essential oils in your water, add them to a gel cap.  If you don’t want to use oils internally then by all means use it topically with a carrier oil. I really think you will love the warmth that you will have with these oils. If you’d like to add some additional pain relief, use peppermint oil also.
If you are looking for a warm, spicy and energizing diffuser blend try blending ginger and grapefruit oil. You can also blend them to make a body spray!
Grapefruit Ginger Body Spray
1 cup water
2 T alcohol free witch hazel
5 drops Grapefruit Oil
2 drops Ginger Oil
1 drop Vetiver Oil
Mix together and put in a glass spray bottle. Shake well to combine and before using.

THE ESSENTIALS FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY

OOTM 2015-February
Cedarwood is a soothing and grounding oil, which may help you to relax and overcome stress. It is a mood elevator and can help with focus and mental clarity. It has a sedative property and may help with insomnia. Inhaling Cedarwood can induce the release of seratonin which is converted into melatonin in the brain. Diffusing Cedarwood or applying it to the bottoms of your feet may help with your rest. Try adding it to the diffuser with either Lavender or Frankincense oil.
Cedarwood is wonderful for oily skin and can help relieve itchy skin and inflammations. Make your own facial toner with about 10 drops of Cedarwood added to 1 ounce of alcohol free witch hazel.
Cedarwood is also beneficial for hair loss and can be used to treat alopecia areata. You can see the research here http://sparknaturals.blogspot.com/2015/01/research-alopecia-areata.html
If you are experiencing thinning hair try adding some Cedarwood to your shampoo bottle.
Cedarwood is a must have during cold and flu season! It’s an expectorant and can eliminate coughs and removes phlegm from the respiratory tracts and lungs. By stimulating the loosening of phlegm, you also protect your respiratory tract and overall health from toxins and conditions that excess phlegm can cause.  Blend it in a roller bottle with your favorite carrier oil and apply it to your chest and throat. It also gives relief from headaches and  red and watery eyes.

Essentials For Your Valentine

Lavender and Rose oil are great oils for your skin.  Yes, Rose oil is very expensive but a little goes a long way.  You can make a very simple serum for your face with 1 drop each of lavender and rose oil added to an ounce of your favorite carrier oil.  Add a little of your homemade serum to your face and neck daily.
Here’s a guide to choosing a carrier oil for your skincare:
Dry or Mature Skin: Hemp Seed Oil or Fractioned Coconut Oil
Oily and Blemish-Prone Skin: Grapeseed Oil or Hemp Seed Oil
Normal Skin: Sweet Almond Oil or Hemp Seed Oil
You will love the calming aromatherapy from all three of these products. They can all be used in your diffuser and lavender and rose oil would be lovely added to your bath. Remember a little goes a long way with the rose oil, simply inhaling it from the bottle can be extremely calming.  Rose Water is a one of my favorite products from Spark Naturals and it can be used in so many ways. It’s a very calming so not only will skin irritations be calmed but it can relax your mood. Spritz your face before or after you apply your makeup and use it as a body spray. Rose Water also makes a great linen spray, spritz your bedding, linens and use it to freshen your closet.

How do I use my essential oils?

So you’ve purchased your oils and are ready to enter into a new wellness for yourself and family. Essential oils can be used for preventative care and also used for illness. I’m a person who doesn’t care to go to the doctor at all. I love using essential oils to care for myself at home.
What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the volatile liquids of the plant. They are obtained when any part of the plant is properly distilled. This may include the seeds, roots, bark, stems, leaves, fruit, branches and flowers!
EO1 EO2 EO3
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years are are mentioned in the bible hundreds of times. God gave Adam and Eve a Garden for them to live in, I believe that it was God’s intention for them to use the plants and herbs to heal and treat themselves. It is also my belief that without the healing plants and herbs that the time that they existed on the earth would of been short.
There are basically three ways to use Essential Oils
1.Topically- Oils that are used topically can be diluted with a carrier oil or applied NEAT (no carrier oil) Most of the oils that we use in our home are applied to the bottoms of our feet with roller bottles.
2.Inhaled- Oils can be diffused (follow manufacturers direction),placed on a cloth and inhaled or you can purchase inhalers here https://www.aromatools.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=inhalers&Submit=Search
We have a homemade inhaler that we use in our home and you can easily make yourself one. Take a clean jar, add 1-2 drops of oil to a piece of cotton and place in jar. We use the inhaler by slowly inhaling from the jar and blowing our breath back out into the jar. Your warm breath will actually “heat” the oil and create the aromatherapy.
Here’s a picture of our homemade inhaler. So easy a child can use it.

When purchasing your oils from http://sparknaturals.com/index.php/?id=525 you will see a description of each oil, possible uses, and application methods.  Some essential oils are not to be ingested.
